American Plum
Size: 18-24’’
American Plum (Prunus americana)
The American plum is a small tree or large shrub found throughout Michigan and much of North America. It produces fragrant white flowers in early spring, followed by small, reddish-purple plums in July and August that are excellent for jams, jellies, and preserves with a tart-sweet flavor. The tree features a broad, thorny crown with dark green leaves and scaly black bark, and it provides valuable food and cover for songbirds, pollinators, wild turkeys, quail, and deer. American plum also spreads by root suckers, stabilizing soil along stream banks and in gullies.

Soil: Moist, well-drained
Key Features:
Bloom Period: April–June
Mature Size: 10–20 ft tall, 15–25 ft spread
Edible Fruit: Red, edible drupes used for culinary purposes
