Bald Cypress

from $26.00

Age: 1-0
Size: 12-18”
Soil Moisture: Prefers moist, acidic, sandy soils

The Bald Cypress, Taxodium Distichum, is a unique conifer with beautiful fall color. It is known for its long-lasting wood which is more resistant to decay compared to other deciduous trees. Because of this, it is an appealing choice for construction and wildlife uses. The cone-shaped fruit attracts a variety of birds and small mammals, like squirrels, throughout the year, making it a great tree to use for bird-watching.

Bald Cypress trees are a large deciduous conifer. They grow to have a flat top foliage, made of sage-green leaves, making them great for shade. Their leaves eventually turn to a beautiful red and orange mixture in late autumn. They begin to bloom their purple flowers in April.

Their leaves are alternating, simple, which look similar to feathers. The Bald Cypress has a skinny trunk in their first years. They then begin to grow a thicker trunk with peeling reddish-brown bark, and a flat-topped foliage. They can reach heights of 75 feet. Their roots sometime produce knobs along the surface of the ground so are best not planted in grassy areas where there is foot traffic or mowing.

Do not plant under powerlines.

*A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. Tall growing trees should be planted a minimum of 20 feet away from power lines, and 50 feet away to avoid future pruning.

*This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here:  https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
