Bur Oak

from $9.00

Size: 18-24’

Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)

The bur oak is a majestic native tree of Michigan and one of the most massive of all oaks. With its broad, irregular crown, deeply furrowed gray bark, and distinctive burr-covered acorns, this species offers a timeless and rugged beauty.  Known for its strength and longevity, living up to 400 years, it provides dense shade and serves as an important food source for wildlife such as deer, turkeys, bears, and squirrels. Among the white oaks, it is one of the fastest-growing and most tolerant of urban conditions, making it suitable for large properties, parks, and open landscapes.

Requirements:
Light:
Full sun
Soil: Adaptable to acidic, alkaline, clay, loamy, sandy, well-drained, or wet soils; tolerates drought and pollution

Key Features:

  • Mature Size: 70–80 ft tall, 45 ft spread

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast for an oak

  • Wildlife Value: Produces large, edible acorns that feed birds and mammals

Plant Care:
Plant bare-root specimens promptly before growth begins. Water regularly during establishment, but once mature, bur oaks tolerate both drought and occasional flooding. Protect young trees from deer damage. Best suited for open areas with ample space. Do not plant under power lines.

This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here:  https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
