Chinkapin Oak
Size: 18-24’
Chinkapin Oak (Quercus muehlenbergii)
Chinkapin oak is a medium to large native oak of the Midwest. It features glossy, coarsely-toothed yellow-green leaves, a pale gray, scaly ridged trunk, and a rounded crown with age. The tree produces small, sweet acorns that mature in one year and serve as an important food source for squirrels, mice, chipmunks, deer, turkey, and other birds. It may take up to 30 years for this tree to bear a first crop of acorns. Although it primarily grows in dry, rocky soils in the wild, it seems to prefer moist fertile loams in cultivation.
Requirements:
Light: Full sun
Soil: Moist, well-drained, alkaline or clay soils; tolerates dry sites
Key Features:
Bloom Period: April–May
Mature Size: 50–80 ft tall, 50–70 ft spread
Wildlife Value: Acorns eaten by birds and mammals
Plant Care:
Plant in full sun on well-drained soils. Do not plant under power lines. Adaptable and low-maintenance once established, chinkapin oak is ideal for parks, large landscapes, and naturalized plantings.
This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here: https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
