Montmorency Cherry

from $29.00

Min. Caliper: 3/4"
Root Stock: Mahaleb

Montmorency Cherry (‘Prunus cerasus 'Montmorency')

Montmorency Cherry is America’s most popular tart cherry, treasured for its bright red, medium-large fruit and rich, tangy flavor that bakers and jam makers love. The firm yellow flesh and clear juice make it ideal for pies, preserves, sauces, and other culinary uses. This cold-hardy cherry ripens early in the season and blooms late with clusters of white flowers. Montmorency is self-fertile, but planting two or more trees will significantly improve fruit production.

Requirements:
Light: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained, loamy or sandy soil; drought tolerant once established

Key Features:

  • Mature Size: 8–18 feet tall × 10–20 feet wide

  • Harvest Period: Early season (late June)

  • Wildlife Value: Fruit is eaten by birds and mammals; foliage is browsed

  • Pollination: Self-fertile; additional trees increase yield

Plant Care:
Montmorency Cherry thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Space trees to allow for their mature spread and maintain a manageable height through regular pruning. Netting with nylon or cheesecloth is recommended as fruit begins to ripen to protect the crop from birds. With proper care, this historic and productive variety provides reliable early-season harvests of classic tart cherries prized for baking and preserving.

*A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. Tall growing trees should be planted a minimum of 20 feet away from power lines, and 50 feet away to avoid future pruning.

*This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here:  https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
