The Paw Paw (Asiminatriloba) with its large, drooping leaves and unique purple/black flowers, is a Michigan native that will add a bit of the tropical look to your backyard. The cup-shaped flowers also give way to oblong yellow-green edible fruit that is sweet, tasting like a mix of bananas, pineapples, and mangos. It is the only tropical fruit tree native to Michigan and the largest tree fruit native to the US. Scientists have determined that it has grown here for at least 15,000 years. The fruit was consumed by mastodons, Native Americans, and European settlers who created the song, “Way Down Yonder in the Paw Paw Patch” in honor of the delicious fruit.
The tree produces flowers from April to May. and yields oblong fruit that matures to a dark brown in autumn. Features 6"–12" leaves that provide yellow fall color. Requires two trees to pollinate and produce fruit . Will begin flowering and fruiting within 4–8 years.
Deer resistant. Small mammals and birds enjoy the fruit and use the tree for shelter.
Prefers Full Sun, Partial Sun/Shade. Prefers Acidic, Moist, Well Drained, Wet soils but is known to grow well upland, too. Mature Height: 15' - 25' Mature Spread: 15' - 25'
*A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. Tall growing trees should be planted a minimum of 20 feet away from power lines, and 50 feet away to avoid future pruning.
