Red Maple
4-5' Liners
Red Maple (Acer rubrum)
Red maple is one of the most recognizable and beloved trees in North America, valued for its year-round beauty, adaptability, and excellent shade. True to its name, this tree displays red features in every season: buds in winter, flowers in early spring, red-tinged new leaves in summer, and brilliant red or yellow foliage in autumn. Fast-growing and hardy, it thrives in a wide variety of soils and conditions, making it a reliable choice for landscapes across Michigan.
Requirements:
Light: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Moist to wet, well-drained soils; tolerates clay, loam, sand, and silty soils; prefers slightly acidic conditions
Key Features:
Mature Size: 40–70 feet tall × 30–50 feet wide (Do not plant under power lines)
Wildlife Value: Flowers attract early pollinators; seeds and buds provide food for birds and small mammals
Plant Care:
Red maple is easy to transplant and grows quickly once established. It tolerates urban conditions, wet soils, and even proximity to black walnut trees. For best color and growth, plant in moist, acidic soil in a sunny location. Low maintenance and highly adaptable. Do not plant under or near powerlines due to it’s mature height.
*This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here: https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
