The Red Osier Dogwood, Cornus sericea, is native to Michigan and most of North America.The bright red twigs on this shrub give it its name, Red Osier (Red Twig) Dogwood, while both the flowers and berries are a bright white color. The flower bloom period goes from late spring in May to early fall in October. Their leaves are a dark green in the summer and turn to multiple different colors, that can range from red to purple, in autumn. To keep the stems red, prune the shrub back each fall.

This shrub is commonly used to prevent water erosion along waterway banks as their root system holds together the bank’s soil. Its bark can be used as dye for Native Americans. It is a food source for many mammals, like raccoons, black bears, beavers, and rabbits. Red Osier also attract 47 bird species including the American Goldfinch, Northern Flicker, and the Brown Thrasher.

Red Osier is a multi-stemmed shrub that can reach a height of 12 feet. It is shade-tolerant but prefers moist and well-drained soil. It has opposite leaves that grow to about 12 centimeters long. It would can be planted under utility lines without concern for height.

*A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. Tall growing trees should be planted a minimum of 20 feet away from power lines, and 50 feet away to avoid future pruning.
