Eastern Redbud

from $13.00

Size: 18-24”

Scientific Name: Cercis canadensis

A first sign of spring and native to Michigan, the Eastern Redbud’s delicate blossoms and buds are one of the season’s most dramatic displays and are edible to humans. The flower clusters, which are borne along the stems, are rich in both nectar and pollen. They provide a valuable food source for early bees at a time when food is scarce. Bees that visit these flowers include honey bees, bumble bees, mason bees, cuckoo bees, long-horned bees, mining bees, and sweat bees. Redbuds are also host plants for the larvae of several butterflies and moths.

Unique and irregular branching patterns combine with a trunk that commonly divides close to the ground to create a very handsome, spreading and often flat-topped crown. Features heart-shaped leaves that emerge a reddish color, turning dark green as summer approaches and then yellow in the fall.

Makes a bold landscape statement, with its irregular branching and graceful crown. Plant multiple close together for a dramatic clump effect. Plant in front of evergreens for extra “pop” of color. Sun Preference: Full Sun, Partial Sun/Shade. Soil Preference: Acidic, Alkaline, Clay, Loamy, Moist, Rich, Sandy, Well Drained. Mature Height: 20' - 30' Mature Spread: 25' - 35'

This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here:  https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
