Saskatoon Serviceberry
Size: 18-24”
Saskatoon Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia)
Saskatoon Serviceberry is a medium-to-large Michigan native shrub or small tree with four-season interest. Fragrant white flowers bloom in early spring, followed by large, juicy bluish-purple berries that attract songbirds and are edible for humans. Its foliage turns brilliant yellow and red in fall, and the smooth gray bark with vertical streaks adds winter appeal, making it ideal for woodland gardens, shrub borders, or mass plantings.
Requirements:
Light: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Moist, Well-drained, tolerant of clay and alkaline soils
Key Features:
Bloom Period: Early to late spring
Mature Size: 6–10 ft tall and wide
Wildlife Value: Flowers attract pollinators; berries feed songbirds
Edible Fruit: Berries are edible
Plant Care:
Tolerates a wide range of soils and pH but prefers well-drained sites. Root suckers form dense colonies, so space accordingly. Avoid wet soils for best growth. Prune as needed to maintain form and remove any damaged wood.
———————————————————
*A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. Tall growing trees should be planted a minimum of 20 feet away from power lines, and 50 feet away to avoid future pruning.
*This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here: https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
