Seckel Pear
Min. Caliper: 5/8"
Root Stock: OHxF 97
Seckel Pear (Pyrus communis ‘Seckel’)
Seckel Pear, also known as the “sugar pear” or “candy pear,” is a small, dessert-quality pear prized for its intense sweetness and rich, honeyed flavor. Its bite-sized, russeted fruit ripens in late summer and is excellent for fresh eating, baking, poaching, and preserves. Seckel Pear trees are hardy, highly productive, and resistant to fireblight. The tree is partially self-fertile but produces better yields when planted near a compatible pear variety like the Harrow Sweet Pear (for sale this year too!)
Requirements:
Light: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil; tolerates a range of conditions
Key Features:
Mature Size: 15–25 feet tall × 15–25 feet wide
Wildlife Value: Provides fruit for pollinators and wildlife; supports cross-pollination with the harrow sweet pear and other varieties
Plant Care:
Seckel Pear grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. Regular pruning in late winter maintains shape, encourages airflow, and ensures consistent fruiting. Thin fruit annually to maintain size and prevent biennial bearing. Ideal for home orchards and small landscapes seeking a compact, flavorful, and heirloom pear with reliable harvests.

*A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. Tall growing trees should be planted a minimum of 20 feet away from power lines, and 50 feet away to avoid future pruning.
*This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here: https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
