Sugar Maple

from $13.00

Size: 18-24"

Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)

Sugar Maple is one of Michigan’s most beloved native trees, prized for its stunning fall color and ecological value. Known for its dense, rounded crown and excellent shade, this tree transforms the landscape each autumn with vibrant hues of yellow, burnt orange, and red. Its sap has the highest sugar content of all maples, making it the primary source for maple syrup, while its seeds can be roasted and eaten. Sugar maples support diverse wildlife: whitetail deer and rabbits browse on buds and twigs, and the tree attracts game birds, small mammals, and insect pollinators.

Requirements:
Light: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Moist, well-drained soil; tolerates acidic, alkaline, and clay conditions

Key Features:

  • Mature Size: 60–75 feet tall × 40–50 feet wide (Do not plant under powerlines)

  • Wildlife Value: Provides food and shelter for birds, mammals, and pollinators; important habitat tree

Plant Care:
Plant in full sun to part shade with moist, well-drained soil. Sugar Maple is moderately sensitive to drought and pollution but adapts to various soil types. Avoid pruning in spring to prevent sap loss. Do not plant under or near power lines due to its mature height.

This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here:  https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
