Sweatheart Cherry
Size: 4-5 ft
Root Stock: Mazzard
The cherries from this tree are famously shaped like hearts, giving them the name Sweetheart Cherries. They are large, bright red, sweet cherries. They ripen later in the season, usually a week after Lapin Cherry trees. The Sweetheart Cherry can be eaten fresh or preserved through freezing and canning. Beautiful white blossoms precede the cherries in mid-spring making this a lovely ornamental tree, as well.
Since the Sweetheart Cherry trees are from Canada, they are very cold hardy making them great for Michigan winters. They grow between 12 and 16 feet tall at maturity. This tree will begin to bear fruit at 2-5 years old. To prevent mildew and other fungal diseases, pruning should be done in the late winter. These trees prefer locations with full sun and well-drained soil. They are self-pollinating trees.
*A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. Tall growing trees should be planted a minimum of 20 feet away from power lines, and 50 feet away to avoid future pruning.
*This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here: https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
