White Spruce Seedlings

from $17.00

Age: 2-0
Size: 9-15”
Soil Moisture: Medium-Moist

(Picea glauca) The white spruce is a Michigan native species. It has short, rigid, pale greyish blue-green or dark green needles. The needles emerge from twigs individually and are aromatic. Fruits are short cones with broad, flat-tipped scales. Cones are typically clustered near the top of the tree. Immature cones are green. Bark is grey-brown and scaly. Twigs may droop slightly.

A straight, tall tree easily recognized by its needles. Beautiful year-round color. Nesting and shelter for many animals and birds, seeds used as food by crossbills, grosbeaks, and nuthatches, foliage eaten by deer, rabbits, and grouse; black bears and porcupines enjoy the bark.

Tolerates most soil conditions. Grows to 60'; 15' spread. Prefers full sun. Do not plant under power lines.

*A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. Tall growing trees should be planted a minimum of 20 feet away from power lines, and 50 feet away to avoid future pruning.

*This plant will be packaged as "bare root". Bare root plants have no soil around their roots. Bare root trees, shrubs, and perennials must be planted as soon as possible before growth begins. Find care and planting instructions here:  https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/bare-root.cfm
